The Edge AI Engineering Lab is built around the STMicroelectronics AI Ecosystem, giving students a hands-on environment where embedded systems and machine learning come together. Rather than treating AI and embedded programming as separate subjects, students learn how they combine to build smart, sensor-driven devices capable of real-time decision-making without relying on the cloud.
The lab follows the same workflow used by Edge AI engineers in industry. Students start by building dataloggers on the STM32 Nucleo Cortex M4 board using motion and audio sensors, writing embedded C, sensor drivers, and signal processing routines. They then move into machine learning development with NanoEdge AI Studio, STM32Cube.AI, and Python frameworks like TensorFlow and Keras, building models for anomaly detection, classification, and regression. Finally, students deploy these models on embedded hardware, learning to balance accuracy, speed, and power efficiency.
The lab is powered by a complete Edge AI Developer Kit - an STM32 Nucleo Cortex M4 board with protective casing, a sensor suite covering motion, audio, temperature, humidity, light, and ultrasonic sensing, a graphical display, a 4GB microSD datalogger, and all required accessories - paired with expert-led training to make institutions ready to deliver industry-grade Edge AI education.
